4. ADDITIVE INVERSE AND MULTIPLICATIVE INVERSE
| ADDITIVE INVERSE AND MULTIPLICATIVE INVERSE |
Learn and Remember:
1. Additive inverse : Two rational numbers whose sum is zero are called opposite numbers. Each is said to be the additive inverse of the other.
e.g. 2+(-2)=0. 2 is the additive inverse of – 2 and vice versa.
For a rational number a ⁄ b, - a ⁄ b is its additive inverse.
2. Multiplicative inverse : If the product of two rational numbers is 1, then each is said to be the multiplicative inverse of the other.
e.g. 5 x 1 ⁄ 5 =1
∴ 5 and 1 ⁄ 5 are multiplicative inverses of each other.
