SUBUNIT 6.1 : Prose

Let's Understand

        Reading the text or passages or any other piece of written information help us to comprehend, to understand and to improve our language. The passages may include various topics such as, science, history, weather report, advertisements etc. which related with their day-to-day experiences. The passages definitely will help them to get interested in language learning.

    ⇒ Things to remember

(1) Read the passage quickly to get the general idea (skimming)

(2) Read again, a little slowly but purposefully to know the details (scanning)

(3) Now, study the questions thoroughly and find the answers.

(4) After extensive reading, you will be able to link your information with the logical

reasoning and also get to know the contextual meaning of the given word.

(1) Skimming sills : to get the general idea of the passage.

(2) Scanning skill : to get the detailed study of the passage.

(3) Vocabulary skill : to know the new English words with their contextual meaning and application.

(4) Personal response : provide ample ways to develop their logical reasoning and express opinion.

Passage No.1 

    My dear Uncle,

            I just remembered that it is your birthday on Saturday and so I must send you a birthday letter at once. I begin with greetings, : Many many happy returns of the day." You have always been a kind and generous uncle to me. I was so glad to hear from father that still you can take your four miles walk every day and still play a good set of tennis. Bravo uncle !
